Sabin Tavern
Where was struck the first blow for Independence by the colonists.
Captain Abraham Whipple famous sea captain.
Sabin Tavern stood where the Gaspee Building is located.
Located at 182-198 South Main Street in Providence.
This Tavern was a popular hostelry in the town.
In this tavern was formed the plot that for courage in planning
and boldness in execution and unanimity to the resistance to
tyranny stands without parallel in history.
An inscribed tablet is on the Planet Street side of the Gaspee Bldg
Sons of Liberty upon this corner stood the Sabin Tavern in which on
the evening of June 9th in 1772 the party met and organized to destroy
HBM Schooner Gaspee in the destruction of which was shed the first
blood of the American Revolution.
This daring plot was carried out by Captain Abraham Whipple.
He was a Rhode Island hero with a record that included the capture
of 26 vessels in a single voyage and capture of the first prize of
the Revolution.
Captain Whipple's famous reply to the British commander who
threatened to hang him at the yard arm for his part in the Gaspee
affair was to say Sir always catch a man before you hang him.
This reply made him an authentic historical character not excelled
in maritime history.
