Most Entries Ever Received in Library’s Bilingual Young Authors Contest
Awards to be Presented April 28 at Día de los Niños: Día de los Libros Celebration - A Day for Kids and Books!
Children, families and community schools and child care centers have submitted nearly 90 bilingual (English/Spanish) books for the largest-ever turnout in Providence Public Library’s (PPL) annual bilingual story writing contest.
A total of 88 illustrated works in several categories are being judged by volunteers with this year’s sponsoring organizations, including Target – the official national sponsor of Día 2007 – and local partners Providence en Español Newspaper, Poder 1110 and Sodexho School Services. “This has been our best response ever,” said project coordinator Cheryl Space, PPL’s Coordinator of Children’s Programs. “We have received so many exceptional bilingual books on a huge variety of subjects from children and entire families. This was also the first year we have had collaborative books submitted by schools and family child care centers, including the International Charter School and Beautiful Beginnings.”
This is PPL’s seventh bilingual young authors contest sponsored in conjunction with the Library’s annual Día de los Niños: Día de los Libros celebration, a Day for Children and Books. This year’s winners will, once again, be announced during the Día de los Niños: Día de los Libros celebration at Knight Memorial Library, 275 Elmwood Ave, Providence, on Saturday, April 28, from 12 – 3 pm. This family event also features a Latin American Cultural Fair, entertainment, including: Teatro Ecas: Grupo Infantil y Juvenil and Fraternidad Folklorica Boliviano de Rhode Island, crafts, refreshments, prizes and free books! The event is free and open to the public; no registration necessary.
