What is the Computer Whiz Kids program?
Thanks to the generous support from Verizon and Sovereign Bank, the Providence Public Library is able to offer free, high-quality computer classes for children. Classes are held at every Providence branch library. Three different programs are offered during the school year, as well as Computer Summer Camps.
 
Who can sign up?

The Whiz Kids and Advanced Whiz Kids Programs are for 4th-7th graders.

The Junior Whiz Kids Program is for 3rd and 4th graders. Computer Summer camps are for 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders.

 
When are classes held?
Classes meet every week on a designated day. Each class is 45 minutes. See the 2006 - 2007 schedule and call your local branch to register.
 
What will they do?
Junior Whiz Kids (4-week series)
Junior Whiz Kids will complete computer crossword puzzles, create signs using Print Shop, make stationery using Microsoft Word, write Wacky Tales on the World Wide Web.

Whiz Kids (6-week series)
Weekly classes will include exploring computer hardware, building electrical circuits, designing a flyer in Microsoft Word, creating a super slide show in Microsoft PowerPoint and researching on the Web.
 

Children completing a series will receive a Certificate of Completion, a floppy disk, and a surprise gift.
We expect a lot from our Whiz Kids and we are never disappointed!

Advanced Whiz Kids (4-week series)
These 4 week series are available for students who have completed the Intermediate series.
Using an online web page builder, students will create a web page incorporating links, digital photographs, backgrounds and effects. Samples of the student web pages will be available from the Library's site.
   

Digital Filmmaking Class
offered at various branch locations. 6 weeks of exploring the filmmaking process from the idea to the finished documentary. Students will film, edit and star in a short movie
.

Goal
We engage students with a hands-on approach in the rapidly changing field of technology . Understanding the basics of computer design and developing proficiency in software applications prepares Whiz Kids for success in high school.
